As political activities for the December 5th Bayelsa Governorship elections gather momentum, Governor Henry Seriake Dickson has assured Bayelsans of a more effective collaboration between the State and Federal Governments to create an enabling environment for the successful conduct of the governorship elections.
The Governor, who gave the assurance during an interactive session with the chiefs, stakeholders and political leaders from Bassambiri and Oluasiri in Nembe Local Government Area, who called on him at Government House, Yenagoa, restated the Government’s commitment to the sustenance of law and order across the nooks and crannies of the State.
He urged Bayelsans to disregard rumours sponsored by propagandists that, the Federal Government is planning to deploy its security forces in Bayelsa to ensure victory for the All Progressives Congress in the forthcoming polls, stressing that, the his administration would intensify efforts to sustain the prevailing stability, peace and security in the state, as the elections approach.
According to him, Nigeria is running a democratic system, where the rule of law looms large, and therefore, President Muhammadu Buhari, who is the leader of the country, would not condescend to do a hatchet job for politicians that have no electoral value in their states.
The Bayelsa State Chief Executive commended the Nembe people for keying into the restoration agenda of the present administration by cooperating with government and security agencies to maintain law and order in the area.
He noted that, even though, the maintenance of peace and security occupies an integral part of his agenda, the state government could not have recorded its achievements without the support of leaders of the various communities, especially in the Nembe-speaking areas, that suffered wanton destruction of lives and property for about a decade, before the emergence of the present administration.
He said, "As the political drums have started beating, there will be challenges particularly from the other side. On our part, we are people of law and order but the other side is boasting not of people, not of ideas and not even of things they have done but of lives or property they can destroy.
"We want to urge you all to continue to be vigilant, and I assure you that government and security agencies are alive to their responsibility of protecting lives and property, and will deal with that decisively.
" Don't be persuaded by any propaganda that the Federal Government security forces will come and bull-doze everybody and create crisis just to enthrone crooks in government. Things don't work that way and it is our belief that this President, who is the leader of our country will rise above that, and will not succumb to that kind of low level.
Governor Dickson also thanked the Chiefs and people of Nembe for demonstrating support for the Peoples Democratic Party by voting its candidates in the immediate past presidential, state and national assembly elections and urged them to maintain the gesture.
In his remarks, spokesman for the group and media executive, Chief George Fente, expressed satisfaction with the achievements of the Governor, especially in infrastructural development and other critical areas of the economy, which have impacted directly on the people of Nembe and Bayelsans generally.
Chief Fente, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Royal FM, 95.5, Yenagoa, also expressed gratitude to the Governor for convening the meeting to foster better understanding and cooperation between the government and the people, while also throwing their weight behind the Governor, describing him as a foresighted and people oriented leader.
